Above Dar Es Salaam, about 70 km away is Bagamoyo. This coastal city was prominent during the time of slavery for Arab trade monitors. It was the meeting point for slaves brought from the trade interior. The prison in which the slaves were crammed together before they were driven through a tunnel to the sea onto the waiting boats and brought to Zanzibar still stands.
Bagamoyo itself is a motley mixture of small shops and huts.
Also the Bagamoyo College of Arts, in the south of the city, should defnitely be visited.
